Different courses have different standards for dress... call the pro shop of the course you'll be playing if you're not sure about their standards for attire.

The Basics

Classic dress for men includes slacks, a collared sport shirt, and golf shoes. Shorts are also acceptable at most courses. 

Classic dress for women includes a knee-length skirt, collared sport shirt, and golf shoes. Of course you have many other options, but you'll want to be dressed appropriately for the course you're visiting.

A wide-brimmed hat, a visor, a bandana, and sunscreen are helpful to keep the sun off your face.

Golf shoes/spikes will improve your game and are available in many styles. Classic spikes are metal but many courses now ask that you wear soft (plastic or rubber) spikes to reduce damage to the course and facilities.
