CHOOSING A GOLF WEDGE

Wedges are specialty instruments of your golf game, used for challenging short shots to the green, including those from the sand. Having the proper wedges in your bag will help you to play the all-important short game.

Types of golf wedges

A pitching wedge has a loft of 46-51 degrees and is used for "longer" wedge shots from 125 yards or closer. A pitching wedge is usually included in most golf club sets.

A sand wedge is used primarily out of the sand, but can also be used for closer shots requiring significant height. Sand wedges have a loft of 55-57 degrees.

A gap wedge has a loft of 51-53 degrees, and is becoming more popular because of the gap difference between the traditional set of irons and a sand wedge. It can be considered a compromise between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge.

A lob wedge is used to finesse shots over an obstacle and onto the green, and usually have a loft of 60-64 degrees. A higher loft will make the ball go higher in the air, but with less distance.

Tips On Choosing The Right Golf Wedge

Look at your current set of irons to determine where the "gap" is between your pitching wedge and your sand wedge. If you have a 48 degree pitching wedge and a 56 degree sand wedge, your gap is filled at 52 degrees. Add a gap wedge that fits between the two lofts. The length of your wedges should mirror that of your regular irons. The wedges will be shorter in about one-half inch increments. When choosing a sand wedge, consider the type of conditions in which you play most often.

Shafts

Wedges almost always have steel shafts due to the durability of steel, and because their heavier weight helps to control the shot.
