WHICH CLUBS SHOULD YOU CARRY?

To begin, let's look at what a basic set of golf clubs looks like. To get started, you would do well carrying three woods, a collection of 3-9-irons, a pitching wedge, a sand wedge (55-57 degree loft) and a putter. Those 13 clubs are all you really need to learn the game, but as you develop and improve, you may want to add additional clubs or change clubs to suit your style and abilities. For example, a low handicap golfer may want to add a lob wedge (60-64 degree loft) and a gap wedge (50-53 degree loft) to improve their short game, while a mid to high-handicap golfer may want to add a seven or even a nine wood to use instead of the lower irons. Just remember that you can't have more than 14 clubs in your bag at a given time.

Low Handicap Golfers

As a low handicap player, you should carry a driver and at least one fairway wood, most likely the 3-wood. You will benefit from lower irons in your bag, because the three or four-iron is a difficult club to hit but they can be useful when controlled properly. You'll also carry at least the three basic wedges; a sand wedge, pitching wedge and either a lob wedge or approach wedge, with not more than a four-degree difference between each.

Mid-Handicap Golfers

As a mid-handicap golfer, you may actually want to add more woods to your selection of clubs. In addition to the driver and 3-wood, consider adding a 5-wood, a 7-wood or even a 9-wood to your bag. These fairway woods give more control and consistency than difficult to hit long irons. For your selection of irons, stick to 3 through 9, since the 2-iron is extremely difficult to hit consistently. Keep three wedges available; a pitching wedge, sand wedge, and either a lob wedge or approach wedge.

High-Handicap Golfers

Golf Woods
As a high-handicap golfer, you may want to leave your driver at home. Try your 3-wood off the tee and use 7 and 9-woods which are easier to control and keep consistent. A basic set of 3-9 irons, and up to three wedges; a pitching wedge, sand wedge, and either a lob wedge or approach wedge, will round out your selection.
